LRB 2988 - "Maintaining Access to reimbursement to family planning providers in the Medical Assistance Program”
AKA the save Planned Parenthood proposal.
The authors of this proposal are looking for more co-sponsors who they can introduce the bill from a position of strength.
This bill would ensure that family planning providers are covered via state reimbursement if they are defunded at the federal level. Family Planning Clinics in Wisconsin have already been jeopardized by actions taken by the republicans in recent legislative sessions. Clinics all across the state are under threat of closure. Planned Parenthood specifically operates in 22 locations in 15 Wisconsin counties, with just two providing abortion services. A survey by Health Management Associates found that in seven of those counties there were no viable alternatives to Planned Parenthood for family planning services. In Kenosha county, there is only one other federally qualified health center, and it currently sends patients to Planned Parenthood due to the overload. Two counties that would have no alternative if Planned Parenthood were to close areRacine and Walworth counties.
Thousands of families in Wisconsin already lack access to public health services. This bill will help insure that those relying on family planning clinics can continue to get much needed care.
Call your state representative and urge them to co sponsor this bill.
