Sinclair Broadcasting has been covertly forcing its local stations to broadcast pro-Trump propaganda -- and now they want to take over one of the most influential media companies in the country.
Last month, millions of local TV news viewers heard eerily similar versions of this Trump-esque speech from dozens of seemingly unrelated news anchors across the country:
“The sharing of biased and false news has become all too common on social media.”
“Some members of the media use their platforms to push their own personal bias.”
“This is extremely dangerous to our democracy.”
The source of the script was Sinclair Broadcasting -- the country's largest broadcaster, which owns 193 television stations and 589 channels in 89 markets. Sinclair has a long history of forcing its local stations to air "must-run" segments, which are right-wing opinion pieces and wild conspiracy theories.4 Sinclair has a cozy relationship with Trump; in 2016, the Trump campaign team worked out a deal for favorable coverage on Sinclair stations.
Sinclair is currently trying take over Tribune Media, which would give them ownership over 42 new stations in key markets including New York, Washington D.C, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The Federal Communications Commission and the Justice Department have slowed the deal down, but they could give it the green light at any time.
Now the FCC chair Ajit Pai—who has sought to kill Net Neutrality—is under investigation by the FCC's inspector general for greasing the wheels for Sinclair.
Please call Paul Ryan and oppose this merger:
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from Kenosha.
I’m calling in opposition to the merger of Sinclair Broadcasting and Tribune Media. The merger will expand Sinclair's reach beyond its legal audience cap of 39% to a massive 72% of US households. The FCC should not bend rules or roll back regulations in order to grow Sinclair’s pro-Trump, right-wing messaging.
Thank you so much for your time.
