A full Senate Foreign Relations committee markup of the AUMF deal is expected on April 19th.
For 17 years, the executive branch has used the overly broad and outdated Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) as authorization to wage unending war against terrorism. This was not how this act was intended to be used, with little or no appropriate congressional oversight.
To address this issue, Senators Bob Corker (R-TN) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) have reached a compromise deal that would end (or "sunset") the 2001 AUMF and then replace it with a modern authorization with more oversight. It is clear we need to reign in the power of the 2001 AUMF. After the April 7th chemical gas attack that killed at least 40 people in Syria, Trump again carried out a series of military strikes. While the atrocities in Syria are horrendous, military attacks should have first received the approval of Congress, as is required by the Constitution.
Why you’re calling Paul Ryan:
This is your local representative in the House.
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from Kenosha.
I'm calling to urge Rep. Paul D. Ryan to push for congressional approval before any military action takes place in Syria, and to vote against any request to do so. We cannot stumble into another unnecessary war due to a President's impulsive and ever-changing policy positions.
Thank you for your time and attention.
