Make that call.
On March 13th, Trump announced Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s firing via Twitter, replacing him with the current CIA Director, Mike Pompeo. Trump plans to fill the vacancy left by Pompeo with the current Deputy Director of the CIA, Gina Haspel.
While Haspel is a career CIA intelligence officer who has spent most of her 30+ year career undercover, she has faced sharp criticism for her key role in a CIA torture program and its subsequent cover-up. In 2002, she ran a secret “black site” CIA prison in Thailand that played an important role in the Bush administration’s illegal torture program. It is known that waterboarding and other brutal methods of torture were conducted under her watch at the secret site. In 2005, Haspel’s name appeared on a document giving instructions to destroy video evidence of the brutal interrogations in an attempt to cover up the abuse.
Two Democratic senators, Tammy Duckworth (IL) and Ron Wyden (OR) have already signaled they will not support Haspel for CIA Director, and Republicans Susan Collins (ME) and John McCain (AZ) have cautioned they have reservations about her promotion. Haspel’s history makes her a poor choice for CIA Director, and Congress should demand a more ethical pick to run America’s premier intelligence agency.
