McConnell has been pressing the accelerator on judicial nominations. He's afraid of November. Last week the Senate broke tradition and confirmed a nominee over the objections of his own Senator, Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and his state's bipartisan commission. Now the Senate is considering another federal appeals court nominee, Ryan Bounds, who lacks approval from both his Oregon senators and his state's bipartisan selection committee.
In the recent past a Senator could withhold approval for a nominee from his/her state--the "blue slip," and that was the end of the nomination. Not any more. Trump and McConnell want their people in place on the federal courts to further their conservative agenda.
What can we do about it? First of all, elections matter and elections are the solution. November. Second, we should still call our Senators to oppose these nominations and let them know we're watching. The situation will be worse if we don't. Third, we should talk to our Senators about what they're giving up. By dropping the "blue slip" custom, states no longer have a say in their federal judges. This is important and it matters to us.
Senator Whitehouse (D-RI) talks about the danger of giving the President the total power to choose federal judges for any state. See the video.
Please ask your members to call your Senators, Baldwin (D) (202) 224-5653, Johnson (R) (202) 224-5323, to vote No on Bounds because he doesn't have his own Senators' approvals.
