Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam just issued clemency for 11 people -- but not Cyntoia Brown. And it's a slap in the face to the thousands of people across the country who have been demanding her freedom. Moments ago, Governor Haslam pardoned seven people and shortened the sentences of four others--he made no mention of Cyntoia.
Haslam has made public claims that he will make announce a decision on Cyntoia's case before he leaves office--we have to hold him to his word. There is still hope. Now more than ever, we need to keep sending Governor Haslam a clear message: free Cyntoia Brown now!
If you don't already know the story: Cyntoia Brown, a 30-year-old Black woman, is facing life in prison because she dared to survive kidnapping and sexual assault. She has been serving a life sentence since she was 16 years old, when she was convicted of shooting and killing Johnny Allen, her attacker. She was a young girl involved in the sex trade, and Allen, a 43-year-old man, picked her up for sex. When he became violent, she shot him in self-defense. She doesn’t deserve to be in prison simply for surviving.
A Tennessee Supreme Court ruled that 51 years is the minimum amount of time someone in Cyntoia’s position must serve before they are eligible for release on a life sentence. This means that Governor Bill Haslam is the only one who can grant Cyntoia clemency and release her from prison right now. But he leaves office in a few short weeks. That's why we're flooding his email inbox with messages echoing the demand for Cyntoia's freedom--and we need you to join us before time runs out.
Every day that Cyntoia is locked up, is a day that Governor Haslam is choosing to ignore her right to freedom--and we cannot wait. While Haslam is more than likely preparing to enjoy the holidays with his family, Cyntoia is still sitting in a cage. Governor Haslam thinks he can dodge this one decision that can set Cyntoia free -- but he is only ruining his own reputation losing respect. As someone considering a Senate run in 2020, he can't afford to let tens of thousands of us down.
