Yesterday VP Pence quoted MLK, "Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy." Not mentioned was MLK's speech just one year later at the Berlin wall: "Here on either side of the wall are God's children, and no manmade barrier can obliterate that fact."
Vice President Mike Pence, White House senior adviser Jared Kushner and Senate Majority Leader McConnell met Thursday without an invitation to a Democrat. From that meeting, the President's Saturday announcement was an endorsement of immigration protections — a three-year extension of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients and an extension of Temporary Protected Status for the refugees who hold it (both crisis of his own making). The proposal was immediately rejected by his base:
Ann Coulter, who urged Trump to wage the shutdown fight over the border wall, said "Trump proposes amnesty. We voted for Trump and got Jeb!"
“The offer the president announced today is a loser for the forgotten American workers who were central to his campaign promises,” said Roy Beck, who leads NumbersUSA, which advocates for more restrictive immigration policies.
This is exactly what happened the last time Democrats accepted a proposal from Trump and afterwards he reneged on the “deal,” making this one just as untrustworthy. Additionally, just as noted by Sen. Schumer, “It was the President who singled-handedly took away DACA and TPS protections in the first place — offering some protections back in exchange for the wall is not a compromise but more hostage taking.”
Call your Republican Senators, let them know where you stand – reopen the government so people can be paid and support their families. Reopen the government so talks on border security can resume. Call your Democratic Senators and tell them to stay strong.
