As the Summer Meals Program moves into full swing across the country, three marker bills have been introduced in the Senate that aim to improve and strengthen the Summer Meals Program through Child Nutrition Reauthorization.
Senators are sending the message that they want to see a meaningful reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act through the introduction of bills that will help increase the access and participation of low-income kids in the Summer Meals Program. We all know that summer is the hungriest time of the year, and that we need more options to reach children in rural and hard to reach communities and a streamlining of the existing meal programs to reduce administrative burdens.
These marker bills establish a foundation of ideas and practical policy solutions as the Senate Agriculture Committee develops their approach to Child Nutrition Reauthorization. They send a strong message that the summer meals program must be a priority in CNR. We know that you agree with that message too.
You can express your support for these bills by signing on to this letter by July 9, advocating for a CNR bill that:
Allows for more flexibility,
Reaches more kids in rural and hard to reach areas, and
Streamlines programs to eliminate duplication.
Also, we encourage you to share this update and sign-on letter with your networks to ensure every organization has the opportunity to lend their voice on the importance of closing the summer meals gap.
Every child deserves consistent access to a healthy meal and, with your help, we can ensure that Congress passes a CNR bill that meets the nutritional needs of more at-risk kids. Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly.
