A growing number of Democrats have called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to cancel the August recess so that they can take up gun control legislation in the wake of the two mass shootings.
Even the right leaning New York Post is asking for action: "Come up with answers. Now. Beginning with the return of an assault weapons ban. It does not have to be this way. It should not have to be this way. Mr. President, do something — help America live without fear."
"Republicans and Democrats must come together and get strong background checks, perhaps marrying his legislation with desperately needed immigration reform," Trump tweeted.
The president's critics noted that the El Paso shooter reportedly wrote a "manifesto" that expressed concern about an "invasion" of the United States by Hispanics, using language similar to that of Trump.
"What's the connection between background checks for guns and immigration reform?" said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, speaking on MSNBC. "That we have to keep guns out of the hands out of the invading hordes?"
NO August break until gun legislation is passed and WITHOUT ties to immigration.
