Since (now-former) Special Counsel Robert Mueller released his team’s final report in late April, the Trump administration has aggressively moved to mislead the American people about the report’s central findings: the Russian government interfered in the 2016 US elections, and Mueller’s team could not clear Donald Trump of crimes related to this effort. In a surprise press conference on May 29, Mueller reiterated that the Department of Justice prevents criminal prosecution of a sitting President and stated, “If we had had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so.” Mueller made it clear that it now falls to Congress to review the report and its findings and act accordingly.
Despite Trump’s frequent claims of innocence, his team has repeatedly and brazenly refused to comply with document requests and subpoenas from members of Congress and courts. The Mueller report’s alarming findings make it clear that Congress must continue to investigate the Trump administration’s potential collaboration with Russia. Given the Trump administration’s obstruction, the House Judiciary Committee must open an impeachment inquiry of Trump.
